Harare, January 15,2012 -Zimbabwe’s top musicians will on January 22 take to the football field at Gwanzura Stadium to raise funds for struggling Freddy Chimombe, son of the late popular musician James Chimombe.

Chimombe, whose heavily publicised shack house in Hopley Farm became a centre of talk on the music circles, is surviving on buying and selling empty bottles and promoter Partson Chimbodza of Chipza Promotions feels there is need to give him a hand.

Every year, this is probably the biggest event on the musical calendar as it brings together musicians from all sections that make up Zimbabwean music on both stage and on the football field and both music and football fans will not be left behind as the likes of Oliver Mtukudzi and Moses Chunga will be on show to raise funds for the struggling Chimombe, who is now partially blind.


This is not the first time that Chimbodza has come up with an event of such nature and of the same purpose. Two years ago, Chimbodza brought together the music stars and the football legends to raise funds for Ngwenya Brothers front man Tedius Matsito who had been seriously injured in road accident.

Matsito event had a large spectator value and Chimbodza is hoping for the same in honour of Chimombe.

The musicians’ captain Mtukudzi could not be reached for a comment but vice captain First Farai says they are going to feature three female players Amai Charamba, Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave and Sandra Ndebele not in goals but as on field players as that goalkeeping honour belongs to Pastor Charles Charamba.

The musicians will also take their time on stage and Chimbodza revealed that the likes of Alick Macheso, Suluman, Alan and Tryson Chimbetu, Peter Moyo, Albert Nyati, Kapfupi, Winky D, Somandla Ndebele, Hosiah Chipanga, Leonard Zhakata, and the Dembo brothers , Tendai  and Morgan will all be there.

Although the football legends will bring their stars Peter and Adam Ndlovu, Norman Mapeza, John Phiri, Charlie Jones, Rahman Gumbo, Willard Khumalo Agent Sawu, and Chunga, this is a purely music event that is bringing top musicians right on stage at the people’s homes and at a low gate fee.

Although slightly different, Chimbodza’s new venture appears to be built along the popular  Clive Malunga led Zimbabwe Musicians Day which brought together musicians from all over the country for an all night show to raise funds for the children of deceased musicians.

The Zimbabwe Musicians Day, however, suffered a natural death after the ministry of information introduced the national galas forcing musicians away from the Zimbabwe Musicians Day.
