Abductees in freedom bid

Emmanuel Chinanzvavana and Fani Tembo, all MDC councillors for Banket Town Council and Givemore Hodzi were last week charged with murder for allegedly killing Lancelot Zvirongwe, a ZANU PF special interest councilor for Banket Town Council.

The trio’s lawyer Tawanda Zhuwarara of rights group Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said a High Court Judge will on Tuesday morning preside over their application for freedom after he filed bail applications last Friday.

Chinanzvavana, Tembo and Hodzi were arrested a fortnight ago on the basis of text messages sent to a Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) radio presenter by Zvirongwe implicating the trio in his abduction.

The police allege that Zvirongwe send Siyakurima a text message on his mobile phone alerting him about his kidnapping, which reads “Ndatakurwa nemabhinya asi ndaziwa Hodzi,” (I have been abducted by some people but I have identified Givemore Hodzi.)
Besides Siyakurima, the police also allege that Zvirongwe send mobile text messages to Assistant Inspector Chidakwa and to an unnamed District Administrator fingering the names of Tembo, Chinanzvavana and Hodzi for kidnapping him.
