Cape Town, February 13, 2013 – The alleged kingpin behind a plot to overthrow Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila has appeared in Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, Business Day reported on Tuesday.
Etienne Kabila Taratibu appeared in court on Monday and would remain in custody.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Medupe Simasiku said the charges that would be brought against Kabila Taratibu were outlined during Monday’s proceedings.
He would appear in the court again on Thursday, along with 19 other Congolese co-accused. They were expected to apply for bail.
Simasiku said the prosecution would oppose bail.
Last Thursday, at the group’s first appearance, prosecutor Shaun Abrahams said the police who arrested them recovered a “wish list” for military training and equipment.
Abrahams said undercover law enforcement officers first met Kabila Taratibu in October, where he confirmed that he planned to overthrow the DRC’s president.
Agence France-Presse reported on Sunday that Kabila Taratibu claimed to be president Kabila’s half-brother. – SAPA
