Oliver Hamuli told The Associated Press by phone on Friday that the army has been fighting the defecting soldiers since Thursday night. He says they attacked one of the army’s positions in the Runyoni zone near the border with Rwanda.
The new rebellion started last month, after soldiers from the Tutsi ethnic group linked to General Bosco Ntaganda began defecting from the army. Ntaganda and his fighters used to belong to the CNDP rebel group, and agreed to integrate into the army in 2009.
They began leaving the army in droves in early April, claiming the government had failed to hold up its end of the deal.- AP
