Coalition of Democrats (CODE) leader Trust Chikohora has lamented government economic policies saying they have left many Zimbabweans improverished.
In his end of year statement, Chikohora said government misfired when it banned the use of multiple currencies and noted that the situation has led to economic recession.
“We are coming to the end of 2019 and the situation in our country is getting worse,”Chikohora said.
“We are now in official recession and hyperinflation. We believe that our situation has been made worse by the economic policies of government.”
Chikohora added: “High among these is the decision to do away with the multiple currency system and replace it with the Zimdollar.”
He said the decision to do away with the multi currency regime accelerated hyperinflation and led to the deterioration of service delivery and increased poverty among the people.
Chikohora said people were struggling to buy basic commodities with bread now becoming a luxury among the majority.
“So as we go into 2020 we call upon the powers that be to dump things that don’t work and start doing the right things for the sake of the people,”he said.
“As CODE we will continue to call a spade a spade and we will continue to fight for what is right and push for a prosperous Zimbabwe. We will continue working with other progressive forces in order to achieve this in our lifetime.”
