Stakeholders in the arts industry including government have been challenged to urgently address challenges and turn around the fortunes of the sector.
There was drama at Amakhosi Cultural Centre on Thursday when playwriter Continueloving Mhlanga told Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Andrew Langa’s delegation to leave after an official had indicated Langa was in a hurry to leave before he could complete his tour of the centre.
A highly emotional Mhlanga told Langa that directors in his ministry are not doing anything to assist the arts sector.
The incident occurred after the Principal Director in the Vice President’s Office Benson Dube had informed Mhlanga that Minister Langa was behind time.
Mhlanga who broke into tears then asked the entourage to leave immediately.
Tempers, however, cooled down and the Minister completed his tour at the centre.
The talented playwriter told Minister Langa that most people are abandoning the arts sector with some talented artists resorting to menial jobs such as coffin making.
Langa said the government is working on the development of the arts sector and is taking major strides in ensuring the industry is fully supported.
Minister Langa toured various arts centres in Bulawayo including Enkundleni and Amakhosi Cultural Centre.
The arts industry is facing funding challenges with only a few artists who have made it managing decent lives.
