Coventry Loses World Record

Coventry was expected to do better in her best event after failing in the 100 metre backstroke and 200 metre Individual Medley but found the going even tougher.

This is the first time in 12 years that Coventry is coming back without a medal from the Olympics after winning a gold, a silver and a bronze at the 2004 Games in Athens and a gold and three silvers at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

Gone too is Coventry’s world record shattered by the event’s winner, Miss Franklin of the USA who took 0.75 seconds off Coventry world record.

Franklin clocked 2:04:06 against Coventry’s world record of 2:04:81 set at the World Championships in Rome in 2009.

Also gone is Coventry’s Olympic record of 2:05:24 which she set at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Coventry finished sixth with a time of 2:08:18 just ahead of Castel Alexianne of France on 2:08:43 and Ruseel Sinead of Canada who clocked 2:09:86.

The17 year old Franklin added the gold medal at the London Olympics to the gold and bronze she won in the 4×100 and 4×200 freestyle relays

Anastasia Zueva of Russia touched in 2:05.92 to take the silver medal and Elizabeth Beisel of the United States finished in 2:06.55 to take bronze.

This was Coventry’s last participation in the Olympic Games and what a haunting, and cruel way to end a journey that has seen her become the best ever Zimbabwean Olympiad.
