Fire Guts Great Zimbabwe Heritage Site

MASVINGO, November 3, 2015-Property worth thousands of dollars was destroyed by veldt fires at Great Zimbabwe Monuments in Masvingo on Monday as the southern region of the country received some extremely high temperatures which worsened the spread of the fires.

Eyewitnesses said that the fires were allegedly started by a cook at Nemangwe Business Centre after she dumped some charcoal which ignited the raging inferno.

Nemangwe Business Centre is located some four kilometres from the Great Zimbabwe Monuments.

The Director of the National Museums and Monuments southern region,  Lovemore Mandima told the ZBC News that his organisation is counting the losses after three lodges and ablution facilities were razed by the fire, while a worker’s quarters was partially destroyed in the inferno.

He, however, commended the Masvingo council fire brigade for the prompt response which he said managed to save the Shona Village which is one of the major highlights of the world’s heritage site.

Scores of human and animal lives have been lost since the start of the fire season which began late July and officially ended on the last day of October.
