Johannesburg, January 18, 2013 – A South African mines trade union official (Amcu), Joseph Mathunjwa has called for South Africa to indigenise mines companies like what Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe did.
He told e-tv on Thursday night that Mugabe had asked for 51 percent stake from Zimbabwe mine owners and they had not moved out but were still mining.
He said the same could be done in South Africa.
Anglo Platinum (Amplats) announced this week it could cut up to 14 000 jobs, close four shafts and sell a mine considered unsustainable.
“We were shocked on Tuesday…this is very unacceptable,” said Mathunjwa on Tuesday.
Zimbabwe’s indigenisation laws have been criticised for preventing needed investment.
