Former Zambia First Lady Betty Kaunda Dies

According to her son, Colonel Panji Kaunda, Mama Betty Kaunda as she was known in her home country, had visited her daughter, Mutsa Kaunda Banda, who is a counsellor at the Zambian High Commission.

Dr Kenneth Kaunda and his wife had recently celebrated the 66th marriage anniversary at their State Lodge home in Lusaka. The couple married in 1946. She was First Lady during her husband’s 27 year rule of Zambia between 1964 and 1991.

Betty was born on November, 17, 1928 at Mpika to Kaweche and Milika Sakala Banda.

She went to school at Mbereshi Girls and trained at the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation’s Women’s before working as a teacher in Mufulira.
