Suspended Gweru Mayor, Councillor Hamutendi Kombayi and Town Clerk, Daniel Matawu were arrested on Thursday over allegations of theft, fraud and criminal abuse of office.
The duo is alleged to have conspired to fund MDC-T leader, Morgan Tsvangirai’s private visits to Gweru using council funds at the expense of service delivery.
It is alleged that the two connived to pay Tsvangirai’s hotel bill amounting to US$185 000 for his stay at Antelope Park.
ZRP Acting Midlands Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the arrest, saying the two are in police custody assisting with investigations.
The rot at Gweru City Council was unearthed by an audit carried out by an investigating team which was sent by the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing following a series of demonstrations by council workers after they went for more than six months without salaries.
During his familiarisation tour recently in Gweru, the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Saviour Kasukuwere instructed the commission currently running the affairs of the city to fire any official implicated for any wrong doing by the audit report.
