Harare City Council Defiant

The drama at Town House is far from over despite the government blocking the move to dismiss about 3 000 workers.

The Harare City Council is still going ahead with plans to retrench, but has reduced by half the number of people to be dismissed on three months’ notice.

On Thursday, Harare mayor Bernard Manyenyeni criticised Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Saviour Kasukuwere for intervening, arguing the matters were still being discussed at committee level and no official communication had been made to the minister by the council.

However, Cde Kasukuwere reiterated that if anyone is to be retrenched from the council it has to be the bosses who earn huge perks.

Although the Mayor says the discussions are still at preliminary stages, inside sources say the council has finally submitted papers outlining the dismissal criteria to the minister and have reduced the number to 1 500.

Meanwhile, 26 municipal traffic enforcement officers who successfully completed 6 months training graduated this Friday.
