Harare Hospital authorities have reacted with panic to the boycott of night duties by nurses by instructing staff not to attend to patients referred from clinics and other hospitals.
Harare Hospital reportedly issued a memorandum on 30 April 2015 addressing all district and other referral hospitals, institutions and clinics that it is now closed to all referrals due to the ongoing strike by nurses.
The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Mrs Peggy Zvavamwe confirmed the health institution can no longer attend to all patients due to staff shortages.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care has, however, professed ignorance of the development with public relations officer Donald Mujiri saying he is not aware of the said memo.
The memo has caused panic in most district hospitals and clinics as Harare Hospital is a referral centre catering for critical conditions and abnormalities.
Nurses have been boycotting night duty since Monday this week in a dispute over allowances.
