Harare Mayor, Town Clerk Differ On Prepaid Water Meters
Confusion surrounds the issue of prepaid water meters with authorities at Harare’s Town House issuing conflicting statements on the council’s exact position.
Harare Mayor, Bernard Manyenyeni insists that there should be wide consultation before implementation of the proposed metering system, adding that council has not yet reached a decision.
“The story of prepaid water metres is not at implementation stage,” said Manyenyeni.
Town Clerk, Tendai Mahachi on the other hand maintains that prepaid water metres are coming and a pilot project will soon be rolled out.
He said council is owed millions of dollars and prepaid water metres will force residents to pay.
“We need the money, residents are defaulting and the only way we can increase our revenue is by installing prepaid water metres,” he said.
While some residents are eagerly waiting for the prepaid water metres, some are completely against the idea.
During the last full council meeting, residents associations lowered banners from the council gallery in demonstration against prepaid water metres.
