More than 100 journalists under MISA-Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) today submitted a petition to Steward Bank and Econet Wireless, expressing their disapproval of the two companies’ raid on The Source news agency last month.
Econet raided The Source last month to retrieve the sources of information used in writing the operations of Steward Bank.
ZUJ Secretary General, Foster Dongozi and MISA-Zimbabwe board member, Columbus Mahunga slammed Econet’s interference in journalistic practices.
“The protest is in solidarity with journalists at The Source and is a clear message to everyone that press freedom violations will not be tolerated,” said Mavhunga.
Zimbabwean journalists have issued a formal complaint and petition against this blatant abuse of journalists and the media against Econet Wireless and its banking unit, Steward Bank over an order issued last month to conduct a search and seize operation at The Source business news agency.
