Executive Director of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights Irene Petras accompanied by Tawanda Zhuwarara, joined the private doctors to prison on Thursday and said Gwisai’s body had rush inflicted by some lice bites.
Medical doctors were able to examine 11 of the male detainees at Harare Remand Prison in compliance with a court order issued by Harare Magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi on Monday.
ZLHR said on Thursday ZPS authorities attempted to move some of the detainees from Harare Remand Prison to Chikurubi Maximum Prison without the knowledge of their lawyers. The detainees were however returned to Harare Remand Prison where doctors carried out the examinations. They were then returned to their cells at Harare Remand Prison.
The doctors will return to Harare Remand Prison on Friday to examine the remaining detainees.
At Chikurubi Maximum Women’s Prison, private doctors accompanied by ZLHR lawyer David Hofisi, failed to access the female detainees for medical examination as they were advised that one Chief Superintendent Chifodya who had the keys to the female prison had already left for the day, despite being advised that the lawyer and doctors were on their way. The doctors are expected to return on Friday to Chikurubi Maximum Women’s Prison to attend to the female detainees.
