MDC Members To Descend At Prison To Witness Release of Jailed Activists
High Court Justice Chinembiri Bhunu granted bail to the 21 MDC activists on Monday.
However, five were denied bail and the court said they cannot be released because they were considered flight risks.
The MDC youth assembly demanded the release of the five, noting it did not agree with the court’s decision about the five as they had previously been on bail and did not breach any bail provisions.
The five are National Executive member Last Tamai Maengahama, MDCYA Harare province Organising Secretary Rebecca Mafikeni, Gender Rep Yvonne Musarurwa, Glenview Cllr Tungamirai Madzokere and Simon Mapanzure from Mufakose.
“We want to give credit to the defence team of Beatrice Mtetwa, Aleck Muchadehama, Gift Mtisi, Charles KwaramThe Jeremiah Bhamu and Selby Hwacha,” said a statement by the MDC youths.
“We also want to take this opportunity to congratulate their families who remained resolute and hopeful during the trying times and also urge the families of the remaining five to remain strong and hopeful one day justice shall prevail.”
The youths also thanked friends who regularly thronged the high court during the trial and those who offered their prayers.
They also gave credit to the party’s leadership as well as the youth assembly for organising various pressure initiatives including demonstrations, prayer meetings and rallies across the country.
The youths also called on the state to speed up the trial in the New Year, stating “Justice delayed is Justice denied: Free them now.”
