The MDC leaders had gone to the coal mining town to give support to one of their own, Moses Mzila-Ndlovu, the co- Minister of National Healing and Reconciliation who was arrested in Lupane last week. Those arrested include party national spokesman Nhlanhla Dube, Qubani Moyo and Benita Ndlovu. The human rights lawyers from Abameli Human Rights Network had gone to the town to represent Father Mkandla who was arrested in Lupane last week for violating a section of the Public Order and Security Act (POSA).

The charges against the priest arose from his address at a mass to honour the victims of the Five Brigade-which human rights organisations blame for the massacres of thousands in Matabeleland and the Midlands in the 80s.Dube told Radio Vop by phone from Hwange police camp that they have not been charged but the police also wanted to check whether the cars they were using were not stolen.

“ We don’t know when they will release us but we are hopeful we will be out soon, ” said Dube.In the morning, prison warders brought the two accused, Mzila-Ndlovu and Father Mkandla to court in leg irons.
