Mabota was arrested at his home in Glenview on Tuesday morning on allegations of murdering Inspector Petros Mutedza last May.
“We condenm the arrest. These targeted arrests are part of Zanu (PF)’s campaign and tactics to derail the movement especially the Youth Assembly as we are approaching the referendum and general elections to be held in not more than six months to come,” noted a statement by the MDC Youth Assembly on Tuesday.
“Mabota will be the 30th MDC member in a coalition work between Zanu (PF) and ZRP to arrest and detain MDC leaders. His arrest is political.”
Twenty-nine MDC activists including the party’s youth leader, Solomon Madzore, have been languishing in jail for over a year now on charges of murdering the same police officer.
The 29 appeared in court in June to face trial of the murdered police officer but denied the charges.
They claimed in their defence outlines that police’s determination to nail MDC-T activists residing in Harare’s Glen View suburb, where the murder occurred, allowed the real culprits to go scot free.
They alleged they had been tortured by police to force them to confess the murder.
