Government has fired the board chairpersons of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) for violating corporate governance ethics.
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Dr Obert Mpofu confirmed firing Mr Nelson Mawema from the TSCZ and Dr Themba Nyoni from CAAZ.
Dr Mpofu said the reason for taking the drastic action is to do with corporate governance issues.
Dr Nyoni was also blamed for failure to ensure the board discharged its duties properly.
Meanwhile, the Transport and Infrastructure Development Parliamentary Portfolio Committee welcomed government’s decision.
The committee has been very vocal in calling for qualified personnel to fill in boards at management positions at the ministry’s parastatals.
Last year when Dr Mpofu announced the CAAZ board, he warned members from the practice of drawing hefty allowances through the holding of many meetings, a situation which has created bloated expenditure on board remuneration.
CAAZ and TSCZ are however not the only boards that are allegedly failing parastatals as many state enterprises are bleeding due to alleged abuse of office by board members
