The capacitating of National Assembly members through education has been hailed as a noble initiative that prepares legislators for life outside parliament.
Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda told the ZBC News at the launch of the Academic and Professional Capacity Building Programme for Zimbabwe’s legislators that education is a benefit that will assist them after their tenure in parliament.
Advocate Mudenda also said his dream is to see legislators who are articulate on issues they advocate for and who justify their appointments as people’s representatives by acquiring enough education.
The launch of the programme attended by members of parliament and vice chancellors of several universities around the country saw the university leaders giving presentations of how their institutions function.
The universities also explained their role in giving access to education for the legislators as a way of self empowerment and increasing capacity to represent their constituencies from an informed point of view.
Among those who attended the event were Deputy President of the Senate, Cde Chen Chimutengwende, the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Dr Olivia Muchena and several vice chancellors of state and private universities.
