Obama Arrives In London Ahead Of Schedule

The Obamas were due to be greeted by the Prince of Wales on arrival but flew into London’s Stansted airport ahead of schedule to avoid the possibility of disruption to air travel from the ash cloud from an erupting Icelandic volcano. They spent the night at the US ambassador’s residence in Regents Park and are due to enjoy the rarefied pomp of a state dinner and sleepover at Buckingham Palace, with Queen Elizabeth II as host.

In advance of his arrival in the UK, Obama declared the UK-US partnership “an essential relationship for us and for the world”. He also announced the formation of a new joint US-British national security council designed to allow the two countries to work more closely together and share intelligence on long-term security challenges, particularly in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

After his time in England, Obama will travel to Deauville, France, to meet with the heads of leading industrial nations, before ending his Europe trip with a visit to Poland, a strategically important Central European ally.
