Oscar Winning Star In US For Movie Premier

The premiere of the movie ‘Music By Prudence’ will take place in Baltimore in the US. The movie will be premiered during the Maryland Festival which kicked off on Friday.

Tapiwa Nyengera, the spokesperson for the band Liyana, where Prudence is the lead vocalist, confirmed the trip.

“Music by Prudence” will be screened again on Sunday and Wednesday.

The group Liyana was formed in 2005 and was noticed in 2006 when it won a national competition for budding musicians, the Music Crossroads. Since then, it never looked back.

Baltimore audiences will get their first chance to see the Oscar-winning movie and will also meet a real-life heroine when Prudence Mabhena appears with “Music by Prudence” at the Maryland Film Festival.

Made partly with the financial and creative support of the Maryland Institute College of Art, the 33-minute film overcame a strong field of competitors to win best short documentary at the 2010 Academy Awards.

“Music by Prudence” salutes Mabhena, 21, as a sublime singer and a courageous woman. It follows her and seven other young musicians in Zimbabwe who transcend, through art and fellowship, the bigotry and isolation they experience throughout their country.

Mabhena will celebrate her victory at the place where the film received some crucial early support MICA’s Brown Center. Patrick Wright, the film’s co-producer and associate editor, is the chair of MICA’s video and film arts department.

He lent his own equipment, and some of MICA’s, to Williams for a critical period of early shooting.

Mabhena was born with arthrogryposis, a debilitating condition that warps the body’s joints.

She was abandoned by both her parents but later found solace at King George VI School and Centre for Children with physical disabilities in Bulawayo, where she found her voice in music.
