Zifa Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Mashingaidze revealed that for normal Premier Soccer League matches, Zifa have decided to up the referees fees from $80 to $120. The referees will also receive US$ 200 for handling quarter final and semi final cup matches.
The match commissioner will get the same amount as the referee while the assistant referees will take home US$100 up from $50 for the same Premier Soccer League matches.
The Zifa boss said they had to take this decision after discovering that Zimbabwean referees were paid poorly.
Mashingaidze said low referee payments encouraged corruption. He added that as long as the referees were happy they would take care of their jobs without any distractions.
Masingaidze said they were also looking at the grievances raised by the Zimbabwe Soccer Referees Association. The referees want to be paid either before the match or at halftime not after the match as has been the case. This was because sometimes they were going for long periods without being paid their monies.
Premier Soccer League Chief Executive Officer, Kennedy Ndebele, although confirming payment delays, added that they had finally paid off all the arrears.
