Police Raid Radio Kwelaz

Kwe Kwe, June 17, 2014-The police, in company of the CID Officer in Charge, soldiers from the President’s Office, and Law and Order officers Tuesday raided Radio Kwelaz offices on allegations of broadcasting without a license.

According to the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Zimbabwe) the police arrived with a search warrant at 10am and started dismantling all the studio equipment and taking CD productions that Radio Kwelaz has produced.

Radio Kwelaz representative, Irene Kalulu, who was present during raid, informed MISA Zimbabwe that the police indicated that their production of CDs is a violation of AIPPA and BSA. Kalulu also informed MISA Zimbabwe that the police allege that the community radio initiative is broadcasting indirectly.

Radio Kwelaz a member of the Zimbabwe Association of Community Radio Stations (ZACRAS) is one of the initiatives which intend to apply for a broadcasting licence as soon as a call is made by the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ)
