Anti-riot police surrounded the church premises and indiscriminately assaulted the supporters.
According to Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), whose lawyers attended to the supporters,at least 51 people were detained at Glen Norah Police Station, without any charges being laid on them.
“Of those taken to the police station, 27 were males while 24 were females. These included 11 minor children aged between seven months and 15 years of age,” ZLHR said in a statement.
The 51 were later released without any charges being leveled against them after ZLHR’s intervention.
ZLHR said the police recorded the MDC supporters’ names, identification (ID) numbers and previous residential addresses. The police reportedly questioned them about the identities of people who
had provided them with food, blankets and other amenities.
