Prof Moyo Nominated For By-Election As Primaries Are Discarded

Zanu (PF) Matabeleland North province has unanimously agreed to have the party’s Secretary for Science and Technology, Professor Jonathan Moyo as the party`s candidate for Tsholotsho North constituency in by-elections set for the 10th of June.

The decision was announced at the Zanu(PF) Provincial Co-ordinating Committee meeting held in Lupane and it effectively means that the revolutionary party will not conduct primary elections in Tsholotsho North.

Professor Moyo expressed gratitude to the province for showing confidence in him, saying this is a correction of what went wrong in the constituency in July 2013 elections.

“In the case of Tsholotsho, the expelled previous incumbent did not even say one word in Parliament. I mean the whole purpose of being in Parliament is so that you represent the community that has elected, and to spend 18 or 20 months in complete silence is a betrayal of the community. So this is a wonderful opportunity to correct that,” said Professor Moyo.

In 2013 Prof Moyo was beaten by Roseline Nkomo of MDC- T who was among 21 legislators recently expelled by MDC-T from Parliament. He desperately tried to contest his loss at the courts without much success. He was appointed as a non-constituent member of Parliament at the mercy of the President who also allocated him the media and information ministerial portfolio. From his recent tweets he is eager to be a properly elected legislator in his own right.

Zanu (PF) National Political Commissar, Saviour Kasukuwere and the party’s Secretary for Information and Publicity, Simon Khaya Moyo told the party leadership to play its roles and remain united to ensure that party objectives are realised.

ZBC News reports that Professor Moyo will be among the Zanu (PF) candidates who will be representing the party when the country holds by-elections on the 10th of June, following the expulsion of 21 MDC-T legislators from parliament.
