Radio VOP Founder Professor John Makumbe Dies

January 27, 2013 – Radio Voice of the People Founder and University of Zimbabwe professor of political science, John Makumbe, has died from a heart attack.

Makumbe had last September declared his intentions to run for the Buhera West parliamentary seat on a Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) ticket in Zimbabwe’s next polls.

Makumbe wanted to contest the seat which was going to be left by Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Eric Matinenga, who is quitting politics.

Makumbe founded Radio VOP communication trust in 2000 together with Faith Ndebele and David Masunda among others to offer an alternative voice to the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation which had a monopoly on the airwaves.

The station, which was then directed by rights lawyer Brian Kagoro was later taken over by a new crop of Trustees, who are mainly from a legal and media background and now operates in exile.

Burial details for the late Makumbe were not yet out by Sunday afternoon.
