Cape Town – Netwerk24 multimedia journalist Le Roux Schoeman was detained on Monday by Eskom security at the Majuba Power Station for taking photos of a national key point.
“[An] Eskom manager … is detaining … [Schoeman] at the Majuba power station, calling in IT to check his memory card,” tweeted Beeld editor Adriaan Basson.
Netwerk24 is the online home of Beeld, Die Burger, Rapport and Volksblad.
Basson said Schoeman was released after the Eskom manager made copies of his press card.
“We are talking to our lawyers and to Eskom about the detention of … [Schoeman] at Majuba powers [sic] station.”
Eskom received a query about the matter from Fin24. “We will revert back to you as soon as possible,” they said in a statement.
The journalists were sent to Eskom’s Majuba power station in Mpumalanga after a coal silo collapsed, plunging the country into an unexpected load shedding situation, which could last months.
Before he was arrested, Schoeman tweeted some photos from Majuba:
