SA Speaker Mbete Asked To Recuse Herself In Zuma Debate

The Motion of No Confidence in President Jacob Zuma brought by Agang SA has been withdrawn in the South African National Assembly.

Agang’s parliamentary leader Andrise Tlouamma, who tabled the motion withdrew it after calling on National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to recuse herself.

Last week, the Western Cape High Court dismissed an urgent application lodged by Agang SA to postpone the scheduling of the motion. The party took the matter to court demanding Mbete not preside over it.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly has approved the Home Affairs Committee’s recommendation to appoint Vuma Mashinini to serve as an Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) commissioner.

Mashini will fill the position left vacant by former IEC Chairperson and Commissioner Pansy Tlakula. The DA, EFF, COPE, NFP, AGANG and FF-Plus rejected Mashinini’s recommendation on two concerns – they wanted another female commissioner and the fact that Mashinini is a former adviser to President Zuma.

The ANC’s majority ensured the recommendation was approved.
