The The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is launching a new television channel on MultiChoice. The SABC Encore will be hosted on DSTV channel 156 from in May 11.
SABC Head of Television,Verona Duwarkah made the announcement on Tuesday. “The entertainment channel as it was called will be called SABC Encore. It is a celebration of the SABC content which has been produced over the years. Largely through the 80’s and 90’s. It will allow us as South Africans to celebrate the past. To bring back those smiles, laughter, smiles and energy that we used to experience back in the days before social media take over our lives.”
SABC Encore will run from 17:00 to 23:00 on weekdays. “The channel will include programmes such as ‘Agter Elke Man’ and Pumpkin Patch,” Duwarkah said.
This comes as the demand of archive content is huge. The vast content will be taken from SABC archives and will be comedy, drama, kiddies and lifestyle programmes.
Duwarkah added that royalties would be paid out when revenue is made from the content that will be aired.
The SABC’s Chief Operations Officer (COO), Hlaudi Motsoeneng, says the SABC needs to provide a variety of new services on as many platforms as possible.
“As the competition for audiences heightens, the SABC needs to ensure that it provides a variety of new services on as many platforms as possible to maintain its competitive position in a market of increasing choice.”
He said the launch of another new channel on the DSTV platform will provide the SABC with an additional opportunity to ensure that its content is available on diverse platforms where other audiences are.
SABC Encore will become SABC’s fifth channel.
