The University of Stellenbosch one of South Africa and Africa’s top universities says it remains committed to non-racial dialogue. This follows a decision not to take disciplinary action against three white students who were dressed as Serena and Venus Williams with their faces painted black.
The picture appeared on several social media sites.
University spokesperson Martin Viljoen says: “We believe pursuing critical debate and conciliatory conversation is of much greater value to the Stellenbosch University community than action against the students.
“The decision does not mean that the students have nothing more to do, they have already made a commitment to participate in discussions in various student forums to help repair relations after their actions caused resentment and hurt.”
