Six Arrested In Mozambique Poll Violence

The National Electoral Commission (CNE) in Mozambique says six people were arrested for violence on election day in Tsangano district of Tete province. A number of polling stations were destroyed and the Commission says it is investigating the matter.

The CNE released partial results for some provinces on Thursday. In two provinces, there are still no results because of inaccessibility.

In Maputo city, 50% of votes have already been counted and Frelimo  presidential candidate Felipe Nyusi is leading with just over 68% of the votes. Renamo’s Alfonso Dhlakama trails him with 20% and the MDM’s Daviz Simango has just under 11%.

Zambesia is the only province where Renamo is leading by 3% after 8% of the votes have been counted.

A high contestation is expected in Manica province where 41% of votes have been counted. Nyusi is slightly ahead of Dhlakama by 5%.
