According to Chidenga, seven endangered rhinos were killed in southern Zimbabwe from early December to Jan 19. He says that represents about one-third of all 22 rhino poached in 2010.
He says the poachers were well-equipped and that “big money” syndicates even used aircraft for poaching missions and reconnaissance. He says five of the rhino were shot in one park in Matabeleland province.
Rhino horn is prized in Asia as a traditional cure for everything from colds to impotence.
while the rhino gets most of the attention because it is endangered, wildlife conservation in Zimbabwe in general is facing many challenges.Zimbabwe once had a proud record in conservation, but the country is compromising some of its own principles due to a number of factors including financial crisis.
