Suspended MDC-T Councillor In Court For Abuse Of Office

By Sydney Gokomere

Gweru, October 06, 2016 – SUSPENDED ward 14 councillor, Ernest Guduza has been arraigned before the courts on allegations of criminal abuse of office and theft of trust property.

Guduza (57), an MDC-T official, appeared before Gweru magistrate Mildred Matuvi facing one count of theft of trust property and another of criminal abuse of office.

He was not asked to plead and was remanded out of custody on $50 bail to October 12.

Prosecuting Pearson Muringani told the court that from December 2013 to August 2014, Guduza let out a council club house in Mkoba 14 suburb. He allegedly received $720 from a resident who rented the club house but converted $377 to his personal use.

Further allegations are that in June last year in the same suburb, Guduza received $100 from another resident as rental fees for the club but unlawfully took the money.

Guduza is among 16 Gweru councillors suspended August last year by Local Government minister, Saviour Kasukuwere on allegations of corruption and mismanagement of council funds and affairs.

The MDC-T councillors successfully challenged their suspension at the High Court in February this year and an order to reinstate them was effected although Kasukuwere defied the order and later made an appeal at the Supreme Court.
