Tuku's Dairai Nominated For SAMAs

The awards presentation is set for the weekend of April 16 and 17 at Sun City.

This is the second time Tuku has been a SAMA nominee. In 2002 Tuku was a finalist in the Best Traditional/African Adult Contemporary DVD – Live at The Cape Town Jazz Festival category.

Dairai is competing with Siki (5 Cents) by Candy, Unchanged by Joe Nina and Ke Mosadi by KB.

Named after Tuku’s middle name Dairai simply means believe. Tuku’s interpretation of the title is that music listeners must truly believe in the album – its messages but especially the adaptation of traditional instruments in his music.

Of Tuku’s albums Dairai is outstanding in that it is the first album where he introduced the traditional instruments proper – the mbira and marimba to fuse with electrical instruments and his own trademark acoustic guitar and bring a whole new meaning to Tuku Music as a genre that is has now become.

The mbira and marimba feel has always been there in Tuku’s arrangements but were generated by other instruments such as the lead guitar and keyboard that Tuku no longer uses now.

On Dairai he used the actual traditional instruments that are now part of all his live performances and recordings – a completely new dimension in the evolution of Tuku Music.
