UK and US ‘concerned’ about Zimbabwe abductions

By  Shingai Nyoka

The UK and US have expressed concerns about continuing reports of abductions in Zimbabwe this week, ahead of Friday’s planned opposition protests over the economic crisis.

Civil society groups say at least six opposition and civil society members have been abducted and tortured by suspected state agents. The government has denied the accusations of state involvement.

Spokesman Nick Mangwana has said the abductions are not what President Emmerson Mnangagwa stands for, and there is a need to investigate and arrest the culprits.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum says the victims were accused of mobilising people to demonstrate.

Western governments have called on Zimbabwe to respect the right to peaceful protests.

It’s another blemish on the record of President Mnangagwa, who needs international support to revive the economy.

The planned protests are expected to roll out across the country over the next week.

Police have warned the public against taking part in the demonstrations.
