US Places Sanctions on Mali Coup Leaders

The State Department says coup leader Captain Amadou Haya Sanogo, some of his followers and their family members will not be allowed to travel to the US. Sanogo and other soldiers seized power in the African country on March 21.

A statement on Tuesday said the action is against “persons who block Mali’s return to civilian rule and democratically elected government”.

President Amadou Toumani Toure was scheduled to finish his term this month, and a new president was to have been elected. Soldiers said they overthrew the government because of Toure’s handling of a northern insurgency.- AP
