Nyanga, November 14, 2016 – VICE President Emmerson Mnangagwa has slammed corrupt local authority officials who are working in cahoots with greedy land barons to short-change desperate home seekers.
He was giving a keynote address at the 2016 annual conference of the Zimbabwe Building Contractors Association held in Nyanga on Thursday.
Mnangagwa said government was worried by the continued tendency by corrupt officials within local authorities who were approving substandard structures in exchange for bribes.
He said such tendencies have the negative effects of shortening the structures’ lifespan while also threatening the safety of the occupants.
“Of concern to government is the continuous churning out of sub-standard structures that some local authority officials continue to approve and certify as safe.
“This tendency has an effect of shortening the life of a given structure, threatening its occupants and short-changing investors,” he said.
The vice president went further to condemn land barons, who continue to make double allocations of State land to innocent and desperate home seekers.
“I also wish to condemn land barons, who continue to parcel out State land deliberately, making double allocations, in some instances to innocent and desperate home seekers,” he said.
Mnangagwa, who is also the country’s justice minister, said such malpractices are a manifestation of corruption and that government will leave no stone unturned to clamp down on all individuals fingered in land corruption.
“Such practices are a manifestation of corruption, and as we have state in various platforms, government will continue to fight corruption across the board, both in the public and private sector, as it scares away investors and raises the cost of doing business,” he said.
