'We'll Support Wheelchair-Bound Mugabe'

Cape Town, January 29, 2013 – A senior Zanu-PF official in Zimbabwe’s Matabeleland region, Jonathan Nkanyezi, has vowed to continue backing President Robert Mugabe even if he became too old or incapacitated, according to a Newsday report on Tuesday.

Addressing people at a rally in Hwange, Nkanyezi, who is the party’s provincial commissar, said he would continue to rally members to support Mugabe even if he was confined to a wheelchair.

“They say he is an old man, but we have not said anything about the old people in their leadership,” he said.

“We are the ones who nominated him for that position.

“He has never at any conference or congress imposed himself, but we are the ones who selected him.

“We will rally behind him because of his leadership. At the moment he is the only leader capable of heading the party.

“They may say he is old, but we will rally behind him, even when he is wheelchair-bound, we will bring him here to address us.

“We will support him no matter all the negative things they say about our president.”

Mugabe who is turning 89 next month has been endorsed as Zanu-PF’s candidate in the harmonised elections that are expected to take place later this year.  – News24
