Party sources told Radio VOP that the new camp aligned to Elias Mudzuri who was re-deployed from Governemnt by Tsvangirai to party bussiness is getting an upper hand within the province. Mudzuri is believed to be backing the Tendai Biti camp although Biti and Tsvangirai have publicly denied any divisions.
Mashonaland West will conduct 15 district elections before the party’s congress in May but sources said the camp aligned to Mudzuri won Hurungwe Central, East and West, Zvimba South and Kariba elections. In Chinhoyi, the elections saw a Mrs Matautse winning although the other camp claimed the election was fraudulent.
‘’The old guard including majority of sitting members of parliament in the province lost out as they had declared that they want to remain in their positions and were resisting elections and change of blood in the party” said a senior party member.
Party insiders said Chinhoyi central district elections had been flouted because provincial vice chairperson Lawrence Mlambo and organising secretary David Mangezi conducted ward elections instead of branch members.
‘’Elias Mudzuri who is the organising secretary is linked to the new group that has the grassroots support and is also linked to secretary-general Tendai Biti who has denied that he wants to take over from Tsvangirai. But what is on the ground is proving that Biti‘s camp is manipulative of the system.”
In Hurungwe central covering Karoi town, David Mutambirwa garnered 190 votes against old guard Mathew Mbiri from who got 40 votes.
Radio VOP was unable to get a comment from Provincial chairperson Japhet Karemba and Mudzuri .
