Winnie's Bid To Stop Mandela Family Meeting Flops

Former wife of anti-apartheid icon and South Africa’s first black president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, Winnie Madikizela Mandela’s bid to stop a family meeting in Qunu with the assistance of the Ngcebetsha clan has failed.

Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Chief Mandla Mandela has called on the Ngcebetsha clan to stop claiming that they are related to his family.

He alleged that some Ngebetsha family members want to interfere in his family affairs when he addressed the media shortly after Eastern Cape High court, in Mthatha dismissed Winnie Madikizela Mandela’s bid to stop the AbaThembu meeting to be held in Qunu on Friday.

The Qunu meeting is meant to clarify who should be the head of the Mandela family. Mandla insists that the Ngcebetsha clan is not part of the core family.

“Many people who want to be on the bandwagon today, and even in this case we saw an individual insisting that they are the member of the core of the Mandelas. They are not members of my father’s family, his brother Thembekile, my grandfather, or Nkosi Mphakanyiswa.”

“They are part of a different family to the Ngcebetshas, yet they are claiming to be Mandelas, and I want again to repeat that the matters of the Mandela’s be discussed by the Mandelas and that will always be my call.”

Meanwhile, Winnie Madikizela Mandela’s lawyer, Mvuzo Notyesi whose application was dismissed, says they are not giving up and will file another application as they believe their matter is urgent. Notyesi believes that there will be chaos at the meeting scheduled for Friday.

“That is what must be worked on, as far as we are concerned, the matter is still very urgent, it has to be dealt with.”
