Webster Shamu who is the national political commissar could not confirm the latest development saying he was in a meeting but party insiders told Radio VOP here that the election will be postponed to accommodate Muguti’s burial.
‘’The late Muguti was a party senior member and we are going to salute his death by postponing the elections,’’ said a party insider who declined to be named as he has no authority to speak to the press.
Acting provincial chairman Reuben Marumahoko said he was still yet to confirm about Muguti’s burial and was not in a position to comment.
‘’I am still yet to get details about PC Muguti’s burial and the way forward on elections scheduled for the weekend’’ said Marumahoko in a telephone interview.
Muguti’s death has thrown the party elections into disarray again as there are moves to gang up against ex chairman John Mafa who had gained support three weeks ago when elections were postponed in Selous.
Party insiders told Radio VOP here that some candidates are being forced to withdraw their candidatures in to support Marumahoko so that Mafa does not win. Mafa is linked to a faction aligned to Defence minister Emerson Mnangagwa in the succession battle within Zanu (PF) and has the support of other provinces in his bid to secure the position.
‘’Mafa is being linked to Mnangagwa faction and is a former Zapu member and we cannot allow that to happen in Mash West. They are plotting every move that will see Mafa loosing the election at all costs,’’added another source.
Mashonaland West is being led by a faction under Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo that settled for Marumahoko after President Robert Mugabe blocked businessman turned politician Phillip Chiyangwa to contest the elections following the espionage charges when he was the provincial chairman.
Radio VOP was not able to get hold of Chombo on Thursday.
