Zanu(PF) Gets Tough On Unscrupulous Housing Cooperatives

Zanu PF has warned housing cooperatives against abusing the name of the party by illegally occupying land and raise the party’s flag at such premises.

The party’s Deputy Secretary for Environment and Tourism, Auxillia Mnangagwa convened a meeting with all housing cooperatives in Harare following reports of continued illegal occupation of undesignated land.

Some self-styled leaders of housing cooperatives are allegedly engaging in fraudulent activities and allocating undesignated land to their members.

Mnangagwa, who visited a number of housing cooperatives in Harare, observed the disturbing trend.

She said some errant cooperatives are abusing the name of the party and the leadership by raising flags and banners bearing President Robert Mugabe to sanitise their illegal activities.

14 housing cooperatives visited by  Mnangagwa are in wetlands.

Meanwhile, the Harare City Council Chamber Secretary, Josephine Ncube said council is coming up with strategies that will improve transparency in the handling of housing cooperative funds.

The city council indicated that it is intending to build more than 100 000 houses by 2018 in line with the ZIMASSET.

The capital city’s housing backlog is pegged at over 600 000 as demand for accommodation continues to rise.
