“Heavily armed anti-riot police details have besieged Harvest House, the MDC headquarters and arrested several staff members manning its regalia shop,” said Tsvangirai in a statement. “Reasons for the arrests are unknown.”
A party youth at the Harvest House confirmed that police raided the party headquarters arresting four activists, two who were in the headquarters while the others were arrested in the regalia shop that sells party t-shirts and other material.
On Wednesday police in Harare ran battles with vendors after claiming that one of their officers had been attacked by the vendors who were resisting arrest. The melee resulted in the vendors and police fighting in the streets along Nelson Mandela Avenue, a street that houses MDC Harvest House.
The police have claimed that the Wednesday incident involved MDC youths. The MDC in the past have said the police have been using tactics to falsely accuse their supporters and officials in-order to tarnish the party’s image.
