This means several prisoners have to share the tiny cells in an already over congested prison.
Officers who spoke to Radio VOP were unable to say who the owner of the goats is.
“We tried to ask the logic of keeping domestic animals in prison …but we were victimised for that. It’s not the first time that domestic animals have been kept in prison. Three months ago we witnessed chickens being kept in a cell,” said a prison officer who declined to be named.
In August Harare Remand Officer in Charge Chief Superintendent Chibaya was interrogated by senior service officials for keeping 200 chickens in a prison cell meant for juveniles. He is alleged to have quickly removed the chickens from the cell before the investigation team arrived.
Efforts to get a comment from Harare Central Prison Officer in Charge Chief Superintendent Norbert Chomurenga were fruitless as his mobile phone was not reachable.
