Zim Supreme Court Nullifies Speaker's Election
Moyo’s election to the top legislature post in August 2008 was challenged by Tsholotsho North MP, Jonathan Moyo who argued that the ballot process was marred by irregularities. Despite losing in the High Court, the Tsholotsho North legislature who was recently joined and admitted back into the Zanu (PF) politburo went to the highest court, the Supreme Court to challenge Lovemore Moyo’s appointment.
“The Supreme Court ruled that the election of Lovemore Moyo as Speaker of Parliament is null and void,” a top aide of the Speaker of Parliament said on Thursday.
Lovemore Moyo is a legislator from the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai. He was elected MP for Matobo North constituency in 2008 parliamentary elections. In 2006; he succeeded Isaac Matongo as National Chairman of the MDC.
Efforts to get comment from Lovemore Moyo’s lawyer, Chris Mhike of Artherstone and Cook were fruitless as his mobile phone was not reachable.
