Zimbabwe bus crash kills 9
Police official Tigere Chigome said on Wednesday that three infants were among the dead. He said the bus veered into oncoming traffic on a curve in the street in western Harare.
Survivors of Tuesday’s crash reported the bus driver, killed on the spot, took a different route to avoid one roadblock and may have been speeding to make up for lost time.
Police have mounted nationwide roadblocks and checkpoints to check for faulty vehicles in efforts to reduce accidents over the holiday period.
Bus accidents, common in Zimbabwe, are blamed on speeding, vehicles that are not roadworthy and shortages of replacement tires and spare parts in the embattled economy.
