Zimbabwe Parliament Defers Sanctions/Violence Motions

Parliament was scheduled to debate a controversial motion moved by Mwenezi East Member of Parliament Kudakwashe Bhasikiti calling on MDC leader and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to urge Europe and the United States to lift targeted sanctions imposed on President Robert Mugabe and his lieutenants.

After the sanctions motion legislators were scheduled to debate a motion sponsored by MDC Mutare Central legislator Innocent Gonese calling on Parliament to investigate political violence which left more than 200 people dead during the run up to the sham 2008 presidential election.

But MDC legislator for Makoni North and Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Elton Mangoma asked Parliament to defer the motions to a later date without giving any reasons for the postponement.

The two motions have heightened tensions between ZANU PF and the MDC legislators with the latter accusing the former of acting in bad faith and in violation of the spirit of the Global Political Agreement, which established the coalition government of President Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.
