Magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi ruled that there was no reasonable suspicion that the 39 activists who include HIV and AIDS activists had committed any offence as alleged by the state which had applied to place them on remand.
However, Mutevedzi placed on remand six social and human rights activists namely Munyaradzi Gwisai, Hopewell Gumbo, Antonater Choto, Welcome Zimuto, Eddson Chakuma, and Tatenda Mombeyarara.
The 45 activists were arrested in Harare on 19 February while participating in an academic discussion. They were charged with treason as defined in Section 20 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 or alternatively contravening Section 22 (2) (a) (i) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, that is subverting a constitutional government.
The six activists were remanded in custody to 21 March.
